The little swim team that could, SHALLOW THOUGHTS FROM THE DEEP END WITH MISS JULIE’S POOL BOY: Miss Julie left the Pool Boy & his eggs & coffee for the pool before 7 this morning ‘cause you can’t start swim practice at 8 unless you’ve got kickboards scattered & starting blocks & lane ropes fixed. She came home for a quick bite & left again for the 7:00 night practice ‘cause 2-a-days aren’t exclusive to football. Her dad helped found her favorite youth foundation in 1958 with nothing but land & a belief they could build a church, ball fields, tennis courts & a pool for a swim team that still competes. MJPB can’t prove it,  but he’s sure in the hospital nursery instead of a knit cap & blanket, Miss Julie had a neoprene swim cap & towel. She’s swam on & coached teams with over 80 swimmers & divers & won top division championships. She coached winless teams relegated to the lowest division with less than 40 youngsters & won back to back promotion to the top division. In 2020, lockdown did just that to the Currents, leaving a 337,000 gallon concrete hole & the Pool Boy thought he heard taps. He was certain in ‘21 when the backlash of ‘20 on an aging facility kept the concrete dry. Except he forgot that Miss Julie & other fine folks similar to the founders thought they could & well, you could plant ‘em & grow 40 acres of stubborn ‘cause they showed that crisis doesn’t build character as much as it reveals it. They swam again in 2022 & in 2023 & today, MJPB’S mule headed boss started on ‘24. Miss Julie used to come home with hardware or soaking wet from the post victory pushing in of the coaches. Lately, she’s come home with no hardware & mostly dry. But don’t despair, she ain’t one for pity parties. This season, there’ll likely be no hardware but there’ll be trophies in that one or two times she comes home wet or that one swimmer finishes the 50 Fly in record time or that one that simply finishes, that swimmer that grasps “can” after determining that whether one thinks they can or they can’t, they’re correct. The Pool Boy will see a lot of those trophies in the case this summer due to stubborn people like Miss Julie & a swim team that believed they could…
